On the Brink: Understanding the Ukraine Crises & Paths Toward a Just Peace

In this webinar, Professors Sakwa and Khrushcheva remind us of the hopes, possibilities, and agreements of the immediate post-Cold War years. They describe the 2022 Ukraine crisis and the new Cold War as the outcome of the U.S. and NATO – with its expansion to Russia’s borders –  disregarding Russia’s essential security needs. They assert that Russia surrounded Ukraine with Russian forces, not with the intension of invading, but as a brutal means of knocking down the door to get U.S. attention to begin negotiations to restore something along the lines of the 1990s OSCE and NATO-Russian Founding Act commitments that no nation will attempt to ensure its security at the expense of other nations.
