Evening with Hiroshima Mayor Tad Akiba
As mayor, Tad highlighted the importance of the hibakusha, or A-bomb survivors, and he led the Mayors for Peace network as it greatly increased its presence and impacts around the globe.
Tad served as Mayor of Hiroshima from 1999-2011. He earlier represented Hiroshima as a member of the Japanese Diet (parliament) and taught at Tufts University, Hiroshima Shudo and Hiroshima Universities. As President of Mayors for Peace, he led the organization’s growth from 440 members to approximately 5,000, and from 2011 to 2014 he served as Chairman of the Middle Powers Initiative.
